Clyde Jenkins, of Page County, VA, is a basket maker, apple grafter, stone waller, chair seat weaver – an all-around Appalachian renaissance man. He is a frequent collaborator with the Virginia Folklife Program of Virginia Humanities, receiving two Folklife Apprenticeships and returning many times to the Richmond Folk Festival.
In 2024, Virginia Humanities commissioned Clyde to make a one-of-a-kind award as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations. This new recognition celebrates remarkable individuals and organizations who have made exceptional contributions to the humanities in Virginia and who have made a significant impact on Virginia’s cultural landscape.
On April 10, three entities receiving the Commonwealth Humanities Award will be given handwoven, white oak baskets crafted by Clyde. Linda Johnson Robb will receive the award for Individual Excellence, Dominion Energy for Corporate or Foundation Excellence, and the Elegba Folklore Society for Community Partner Excellence. This unique award is fitting for those committed to weaving communities together through understanding our shared, and distinct, stories.
