WaveTalkers Curated Ham Radio, Emergency Communications, Preparedness, and Deployment gear that we use and love. We are sorting through Amazon to find the most helpful equipment that has proven itself in the field to save you time and money. Check it out our new Affiliate Shop on Amazon.
During a field deployment we were asked to push live video for the command staff and evaluators to get a better view of the exercise.
We came prepared with the necessary equipment to establish an AREDN MESH Network with Real Time Streaming Cameras that could be leveraged to accomplish this mission. There was only one problem, we needed more network cables. A run out to a store or ordering them on-line was not an option, we had to make our own in the field.
A cold rain had been pouring on us all morning. These conditions made my fingers numb and stiff, making a seemingly simple task exponentially more difficult.
In WaveTalkers LIVE Episode 94: Network Crimp Kit, we walked through the kit that I’m using here and the same process of making network cables that I’ve followed countless times before.
My numb fingers knew the process well, but making my hands function in the cold presented a new challenge to me. I've added a link in the description so you can review episode 94 and practice this process for yourself. I also added links in the description for all of the cable making tools in my Crimp Kit.
Working in the field makes everything more difficult. You really need to have your gear organized. The step by step process needs to have already been learned cold. There is no time to practice here, you need to have developed the muscle memory for basic skills like making cables. The process needs to have been practiced so many times that your focus can be on dealing with the challenges of the elements and the job at hand, rather than basic details like the order of wires or where your tools are located.
Keep practicing and you’ll be able to accomplish the mission you’ve been tasked with as well.
