25 novembre 1607: la suora che spada alla mano tiene a bada gli uomini venuti ad arrestarla - e che devono faticare per immobilizzarla per impedirle di suicidarsi -- non è una donna qualunque da nessun punto di vista. E' in convento da oltre vent'anni, è la figlia del signore di Monza, ha avuto già due figli, una relazione con un uomo violento e potente e ha almeno un omicidio sulla coscienza. E' suor Virginia Maria di Leva resa famosa da Manzoni come suor Gertrude, la Monaca di Monza dei "Promessi Sposi". Ma quello che Manzoni ha raccontato non è che una parte di quello che accadde in verità nel convento delle benedettine umiliate di Santa Margherita, a Monza. La vera storia della Monaca di Monza (rea di omicidio, torturata e murata viva per tredici anni) è raccontata da dieci faldoni di atti giudiziari dell'epoca con le testimonianze e le rivelazioni sulle gesta di suor Virginia Maria: dispotica, violenta, innamorata di Gian Paolo Osio, nobile arrogante e violento che abita a fianco del convento di Santa Margherita e che la mette in cinta due volte. Osio entra ed esce dal convento a suo piacimento, le suore sono complici. Tutte tranne una: suor Caterina, una novizia che per invidia e vendetta minaccia di rivelare tutto. E viene uccisa da Osio istigato da Virginia e altre suore. Per quell'omicidio pagheranno tutti: le due suore complici verranno uccise da Osio durante la fuga; lo stesso Osio, condannato in contumacia verrà ucciso da un nobile cui aveva chiesto asilo. Alla
fine, l'unica a salvare la pelle sarà proprio lei, la Monaca di Monza che sopravviverà a tutti: parenti, complici, torturatori, giudici e anche alla terribile peste del 1630 rievocata da Manzoni. Morirà a 75 anni. Chi l'aveva vista poco tempo prima dirà che «al vederla si crederebbe a malapena che un tempo abbia potuto essere bella e spudorata».

But what Manzoni told is only a part of what happened in truth in the Benedictine convent of Santa Margherita, at Monza. The true story of the Nun of Monza (guilty of murder, tortured and kept prisoner for thirteen years) is told by ten files of judicial-era stories and revelations about the feats of sister Virginia Mary: despotic, violent, in love with Gian Paolo Osio,a noble man arrogant and violent who lives next to the convent of Santa Margherita and that gets her pregnant twice. Osio enters and exits the convent as he wishes, to the nuns' complicity. All but one nun: sister Caterina, a novice that for jealousy and revenge threatens to reveal everything. And gets killed by Osio instigated from Virginia and other sisters. Everybody will pay for that horrible sin: the two nuns accessory to the crime will be killed by Osio during the flight; the same Osio, sentenced in absentia will be killed by a nobleman to whom he requested asylum. In the end, the only one to save her skin will be the nun of Monza that will survive all: the victims' relatives, the accomplices, the torturers, the judges and even the terrible plague of 1630 retraced by Manzoni. She will die 75 years old. Those who saw her shortly before her death will say that "to see her you could hardly believe that there was a time when she was beautiful and shameless".
