In the rich tapestry of Indian Classical Music there is a specific light classical genre, Thumri where folk, devotional, dance and classical music forms coalesce with a fascinating effect.
The renowned flautist (late) Pandit Raghunath Seth conceived a 4 part series tracing the Evolution of the Thumri genre and its links and relationships to other forms such as Dhrupad / Dhamar, Khayal and Qawwali.
Within the Thumri genre variants such as Dadra, Chaiti and Hori are explored. Iconic performers of these genres featured in this fascinating and a compelling series, in addition to Pandit Raghunath Seth, are Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan, Girija Devi, Savita Devi, Shobha Gurtu, Jagdish Prasad, Begum Parveen Sultana, Birju Maharaj, Ajay Pohankar, Uday Bhawalkar, Haider Baksh & Party and danseuse Archana Joglekar.
The soundtrack of this series was previously released in two CD volumes by Navras Records under the title Rās Rāng (NRCD 0081 and 0082).
