Violent Crackdown: Security forces responded with tear gas, live ammunition, and a government-backed narrative of misinformation. Hundreds of young people were killed, and opposition leaders were detained.
Economic Frustration: Youth unemployment remains high, and rising living costs have made it difficult for young Tanzanians to thrive, especially in urban centers.
What has changed since?
Shifting Protest Tactics: After the violent crackdown, many activists moved from public protests to mutual aid networks, supporting each other through digital platforms and fundraising efforts.
A Grandmother’s Voice: In a surprising twist, an elderly woman, known as Bibi wa Gen Z, emerged as a moral leader, speaking out against violence and political oppression in a way that resonated with young people.
The Gen Z protests in Tanzania show that youth-led movements are not just about political change, but about survival—fueled by deep economic anxiety and a growing demand for accountability.
