This afternoon, we’re walking one of Kyoto’s most beloved paths: the gentle slope leading to Kiyomizu-dera Temple.
We begin on Kiyomizumichi road, then slowly wind our way up Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, two historic lanes whose names literally mean “three-year slope” and “two-year slope.” Stone-paved and lined with wooden townhouses, they’ve been walked for centuries by pilgrims, poets, and travelers like us.
The path is almost always buzzing with people and I think that’s part of what makes this walk so memorable. You'll see locals running the shops, tour groups, and visitors in colorful kimono posing for photos. Along the lively crowd, you’ll find traces of old Kyoto still standing strong: tea houses, pottery shops, and wooden buildings that have watched over this slope for generations. It’s a perfect mix of preserved tradition and everyday movement, all unfolding on a single walk.
At the top, we reach Kiyomizu-dera, one of Kyoto’s most iconic temples, founded in the 8th century. Perched on a hillside, its wide wooden terrace looks out over the entire city. Even in the summer heat, the breeze under the trees makes it feel like time slows down for a moment.
If you’re looking for a walk that blends history, scenery, and Kyoto’s subtle magic, this might be the one.
