Arno Babajanian (1921–1983): Six Pictures for Piano
Arno Babajanian was one of the great musical voices of 20th-century Armenia — a composer and pianist whose music blends deep feeling, folk spirit, and modern imagination. Born in Yerevan, he showed extraordinary talent from an early age and went on to study in Moscow. Throughout his career, his works drew on Armenian folk melodies, Romantic expressiveness, and the adventurous harmonies of modern music. His music earned admiration from figures such as Dmitri Shostakovich and remains a vibrant part of the piano repertoire across Armenia and beyond.
Composed in 1963–64, Six Pictures for Piano (Шесть картин для фортепиано / Six’ Kartin) is a cycle of six short movements — miniature musical “snapshots” that reveal a rich emotional world in just a few minutes each. Though brief, these pieces explore a remarkable range of moods, textures, and influences: from improvisatory freedom and dance rhythms to deep reflection and bold rhythmic drive.
0:00 I. Improvisation (Импровизация) – Andante recitativo
Opening the set with a sense of spontaneous speech, this movement feels like a musical monologue — expressive, free, and vividly personal. Though fully notated, its spirit evokes the unmeasured preludes of earlier eras, suggesting improvisatory freedom within a modern language.
1:54 II. Folk Song (Народная песня) – Moderato
Here we encounter a theme that feels rooted in traditional dance and song. Rhythmic dotted figures and lyrical lines suggest the earthy charm and spirited character of folk music, woven into Babajanian’s own harmonic language.
3:26 III. Toccatina (Токкатина) – Presto
Blazing with energy and rhythmic sparkle, the Toccatina contrasts sharply with what has come before. Its motoric motion and nimble figures create a sense of relentless forward momentum, echoing both baroque tradition and modern urban life.
5:08 IV. Intermezzo (Интермеццо) – Andante
More introspective and reflective, the Intermezzo offers a moment of calm and lyrical contemplation. Its melodic lines float gracefully, inviting a quieter, more personal sound world.
6:36 V. Chorale (Хорал) – Largo
In the Chorale, time seems to slow as the music unfolds with solemn dignity. Built on an ostinato pattern, this movement has the spaciousness of a hymn or prayer — a place of stillness and depth.
10:01 VI. Sassoun Dance (Сассунский танец) – Allegro energico
The finale bursts forth with the rhythms of the Armenian “kochari,” a lively circle dance associated with the historic region of Sassoun. Known as a symbol of resilience and community, this dance movement sweeps the listener into its shifting metres and contagious energy.

Listening Guide
Although only about thirteen minutes in total, Six Pictures takes us on a surprising journey:
• from intimate introspection to dancing vitality
• from the folk-inflected to the rhythmically daring
• from quiet reflection to bold celebration
The cycle’s blend of folk character, rhythmic vibrancy, and expressive colour makes it an excellent showcase for Babajanian’s voice: a composer equally at home with lyricism and modern rhythmic pulse.

A work of cultural identity
Six Pictures for Piano holds a special place in Armenian music, bridging tradition and innovation. Critics and scholars note how Babajanian weaves folk inspiration together with modern techniques, from rhythmic complexity to echoes of atonal language, making this work both grounded and forward-looking.
This is music that does not simply describe scenes — it invites us into them. Each “picture” is a small world full of narrative energy, emotional immediacy, and rhythmic life.
