I finally took my 2000 BMW E39 M5 out for the first real drive — and this is my first impression of what many call the greatest sports sedan ever made.

The E39 M5 comes with the legendary S62 4.9L naturally aspirated V8, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, rear-wheel drive, and all the analog character you’d expect from peak BMW ///M engineering. After one drive, I get it. The sound, the balance, the raw mechanical feel — this car is special.

And yes, she has a name now: Emily.
Emily is a 2000 BMW E39 M5, bought on Bring a Trailer, and she’s now part of the fleet. From the cold start to the open-road pull, everything about this car feels like a time capsule of what BMW did best — precision engineering with a soul.
