This is a rough test to see how YouTube handles 16 mm film footage digitized as glorious widescreen full high definition video. More specifically, the digitized videos have a resolution of 1920x1080 with a 16:9 aspect ratio. Black bars were added to the sides of the full screen 4:3 film footage as it was digitized.
Included are the following snippets, taken from different 16 mm film prints that date back to 1969:
1) Lucas Tanner promotional spot
2) The New People bumper
3) Love, American Style promotional spot
4) The Mod Squad promotional spot
5) RCA Computer Crafted Color commercial
6) Aqua-Net Hairspray commercial
Before uploading this test file to YouTube, I converted the raw ProRes video to MP4 using the AVC/H.264 video codec. The video was also deinterlaced. There was no additional restoration work done to the raw video or the audio.
You'll see plenty of scratches and other damage plus extremely faded color but overall I think the video looks amazing.
UPDATE: I also uploaded the full, uncompressed ProRes version of this test video to YouTube. It looked the same to me despite the 209 Mb/s bit rate and huge file size (1.81 GB) that took nearly 45 minutes to upload. By comparison, the converted MP4 version has a 9497 kb/s bit rate and is only 86 MB, which is much easier to handle.
