Breaking news shocks Libya and Turkey.
Libya’s army chief has died in a mysterious plane crash near Ankara.
Libya’s Chief of Staff, General Mohammed Ali Ahmed al-Haddad, has been killed in a tragic air crash in Turkey, according to Libya’s Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh. The senior military leader was on board a Falcon 50 business jet flying from Ankara to Tripoli when contact with the aircraft was suddenly lost on Tuesday evening.
Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that the jet issued an emergency landing request shortly before radar signal disappeared at 20:52 local time. Wreckage was later discovered near the village of Kesikkavak in the Haymana district, southwest of Ankara. Authorities have recovered both the black box and cockpit voice recorder, while emergency teams continue efforts to retrieve the bodies of those on board.
In total, eight people were killed, including four senior Libyan military officials and three crew members. The crash occurred just hours after Gen Haddad held high-level talks with Turkish Defence Minister Yasar Guler, focused on strengthening military and security cooperation between Libya and Turkey.
Libya’s Prime Minister described the deaths as a “great loss to the nation,” praising the officials for their dedication and service. An official investigation is now underway to determine the cause of the crash, with aviation experts examining flight data and cockpit recordings.
Turkey has played a major strategic role in Libya since 2019, supporting the internationally-recognized Government of National Unity (GNU) in Tripoli against rival forces led by Khalifa Haftar in eastern Libya. The incident comes at a sensitive time, as Libya continues to face political division, armed militias, and long-standing instability following the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
This video breaks down what we know so far, the political implications of Gen Haddad’s death, and how this tragedy could impact Libya-Turkey relations and regional security.
