WCFL RADIO NEWS, 11:30 P.M. CT, MAY 11, 1968
WCFL had one of the best news intros on pop radio at the time. ‘CFL was the Chicago powerhouse “Voice of Labor” (WCFL stood for the Chicago Federation of Labor). Here we hear John McClaren reading the news, which includes a report of Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy coming forward with a “broad economic policy” (the following month RFK would fall victim to an assassin). President Lyndon Johnson, who by this point had announced he was not a candidate for reelection in ‘68, called in a speech in Virginia for help in slowing down “the economy’s dangerous inflationary spiral.” Other news covered includes harsh words for “student demonstrators and troublemakers” protesting the Vietnam War and news of Black students reportedly being harassed by campus police at the Illinois Institute of Technology (Note that just about this time the outdated term “Negro” was being replaced by Black in most news reports–this report captures both terms in use.) And there’s news that a 250-mile air race had been postponed due to weather. It was to feature 34 women aviators, including a 71-year-old grandmother. Wraps with the latest in sports and the weather in “Marina City.”
