On the third day of Navaratri, I share Arunachala Kavi’s poignant ‘Eppadi Manam Tunindado, Swami’ tuned & rendered with moving depth by Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar.
In this kriti, Sita pleads with Rama: how did your heart resolve to leave? If you say you are going to the forest, can even the earth bear such parting? Her words echo the despair of one abandoned, torn between love and disbelief.
The song recalls his broken promises — Did you not vow in every birth never to part from me, holding my hand? and laments how his tender words now wound her deeper than death. Has your heart become iron, she asks, that you can leave me behind?. In these verses, Arunachala Kavi captures not only devotion but the raw anguish of separation, reminding us that love, even divine, is most profoundly felt in the moment of loss.
Violin : Papa KS Venkataramaiah
Mridangam : Palghat Mani Iyer
