BISD adopts new 'Bluebonnet' math curriculum to boost student scores

In an effort to improve math scores, Beaumont Independent School District (BISD) has implemented the Bluebonnet Learning Math curriculum, a program gaining traction across Texas. The initiative aims to create a more engaging learning environment, making math easier to understand for students.

The curriculum emphasizes a transition from concrete to representational and abstract approaches, allowing students to engage actively with the material. Students practice with teacher guidance before working independently, according to Danielle Guidry, BISD Elementary Math Cooridinator.

The rollout began this summer, with students participating in the BISD summer school program.

"It's way more easy to understand than what my regular math teacher was teaching me," said a student, reflecting the positive reception of the new curriculum. As summer school concludes, students are showing progress and increased confidence.

Staff members are optimistic about the potential for improved standardized test scores. "We're hoping, you know, that the test scores are just going to increase little by little until we reach, you know, our goal that we are satisfied with," said a Guidry member.

The Bluebonnet Learning curriculum will be fully integrated across all BISD campuses this fall. District leaders plan to monitor progress and make adjustments as necessary. A summer school instructor noted that the program encourages students to take more responsibility for their own learning.
