In this high-yield cell biology lecture, Professor Zach Murphy presents a clear and engaging breakdown of the Cell Cycle, focusing on Interphase and Mitosis. This lecture provides a foundational understanding of how eukaryotic cells grow, replicate DNA, and divide—critical for grasping normal physiology and disease processes like cancer.
We begin with Interphase, the longest and most active portion of the cycle. During G1, cells grow and prepare for DNA replication. In the S phase, DNA is duplicated, and G2 serves as a final checkpoint for organelle replication and error correction. Some cells may enter G0, a resting phase outside the active cycle.
We then move into Mitosis, the process of nuclear division. Prophase marks the start of chromosomal condensation and spindle formation. In Metaphase, chromosomes align at the cell’s equator, followed by Anaphase, where sister chromatids are pulled to opposite poles. Telophase completes nuclear division, and Cytokinesis splits the cytoplasm to form two identical daughter cells.
To tie it all together, we review cell cycle regulation through cyclins, CDKs, and key checkpoints that maintain genomic stability.
