Agra is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, located on the banks of the Yamuna River. It is a major tourist destination famous for its Mughal-era architecture, most notably the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Fatehpur Sikri, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city was a historical capital during the Mughal Empire and is a popular stop on the Golden Triangle tourist circuit.
History
Founded in 1504 by Sultan Sikandar Lodi, Agra's "golden age" began with the Mughals.
It served as the capital of the Mughal Empire under emperors Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan.
During this time, many of its famous monuments were built.
Key attractions
Taj Mahal: A 17th-century ivory-white marble mausoleum commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal.
Agra Fort: A historic fort that served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors.
