Pocatello, Idaho --- According to police, On April 5, 2025 at approximately 5:22 PM, Pocatello police dispatch received a 911 call regarding a disturbance in the 700 block of N. Harrison avenue.
The 911 caller reported physical disturbance involving two male subjects and a female. It was reported that one of the male subjects was intoxicated and in possession of a knife.
The subject was later identified as Victor Perez, a 17-year-old with autism and cerebral palsy.
Police said, whether or not Perez had a medical condition or was experiencing a mental health crisis was not provide to dispatch or known to officers.
The security camera video capture a prolonged altercation that was underway for more than 15 minutes before the arrival of officers.
Perez is seen chasing the older man while holding a knife.
On muliple occasions, the older man struck Perez as they were engaged over a fence gate.
A woman then ran from the house to where the older man and Perez were fighting.
The interactions between Perez and the older man and woman would pause, and then escalate.
At one point, Perez fell to the ground, and the older man stepped on Perez in an Apparent attempt to separate him from the knife.
Moments later, Perez stood back up and swung the knife at the older man.
The older man is seen swinging a log at Perez.
Perez fell to the ground but soon got back to his feet again.
Perez swung the knife over the fence at the older man, and the woman appeared to be trying to break up the conflict.
At one point, while holding the knife, Perez chased the woman before turning his attention back to the older man at the gate.
When officers arrived, Perez was on the ground.
Officers told him to drop the knife multiple times, Perez stood and advanced toward the officers while holding the knife.
An officer Involved Shooting Occurred.
Perez was pronounced brain-dead by his medical team on April 11. Perez was removed from life support by his family on April 12.
The family of Perez claims, Perez was non-verbal and did not understand English, was unable to comprehend police commands before officers opened fire.
