Tarzana in one sentence:
Tarzana is expensive, but still the most affordable neighborhood along Ventura Blvd.
----------
Script:
I’m standing in front of the Braemar Country Club., close to the south border of Tarzana.
Nestled on the south by Topanga State Park, on the east by Encino, on the west by Woodland Hills and on the north by Reseda, Tarzana is on the site where author Edgar Rice Burroughs once owned a ranch. The city is named after his fictional character, Tarzan.
Lisa Kudrow, one of the stars of the sit-com Friends grew up here.
.
The Los Angeles Times described the area as “moderately diverse”. It is predominantly white, but about 35% of the population is foreign-born with Iranian and Russian as the most common ancestries. There are numerous Persian and Russian restaurants that can be found in this area reflecting this diversity.
It also has the distinction of being among the county’s highest percentage of divorced men and women.
Tarzana has a higher percentage of residents 50 and older. That means people move here and don’t want to leave.
Out of all the South Valley neighborhoods along the boulevard, Tarzana is probably the most affordable. You kind of get some rough parts of Reseda that bleed into Tarzana. Especially if you stay north of the boulevard, it doesn't feel like what you’d expect out of an expensive neighborhood.
Once you dip below the boulevard, it gets beautiful. The more south you go, the closer towards Mulholland Park, the better it gets. You can even pass by Chris Brown’s house on the way! Still, you wont see homes cross the 8million+ mark as often as its neighbors. In that case, Tarzana remains the most affordable way to get below the boulevard.
Going north, the Tarzana Recreation Center has many options for outdoor recreation including basketball courts, baseball diamonds, as well as an indoor gym. There are also many dance and art classes, not to mention, summer and winter camp programs for children and teens.
High performing schools in this area like Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies and Gaspar de Portola Middle School, which has a highly gifted magnet program, are also highly-sought after.
It is also brimming with fitness studios which reflects a highly motivated community.
Restaurants and nightlife can be found on Ventura Blvd. Popular spots like Sol y Luna, Unwind or the Carving Board, Nearby, the Firehouse Taverna and Fishbone Seafood are also popular spots. It’s a place people flock to whether they live here or not. Why not check it out, if you haven’t already.
I recommend Tarzana for its affordability, whatever that may mean.
