The hike to Morteratsch Glacier near St. Moritz is one of the most accessible and educational glacier walks in the Swiss Alps. Beginning at the Morteratsch train station in the Upper Engadin valley, the well-marked trail gently follows a gravel path toward the glacier tongue. The route is approximately 4 km one way (8 km round-trip) with minimal elevation gain, making it suitable for most ages and fitness levels.
However, due to the glacier’s retreat in recent decades, the final section now includes a more challenging portion with light scrambling. Hikers must cross rocky terrain recently exposed from beneath the shrinking ice, requiring extra care. On the return journey, this video includes a detour to Aussichtspunkt Chünetta, an elevated viewpoint offering wide-angle views of the glacier and valley.
Interpretive signs line the trail, marking the glacier’s position at various points in time and visually illustrating its dramatic retreat over the past century. The valley is framed by larch forests, moraine ridges, and views of Piz Bernina, the easternmost 4,000-meter peak in the Alps.
As the glacier comes into view, hikers can observe glacial features and hear the sound of meltwater flowing beneath. The area also serves as a base for guided glacier treks and alpine climbs.
Best hiked from late spring to early autumn, this route combines natural beauty, alpine views, and a sobering reflection on climate change.
