Extreme Cold Fig Growing in Zone 4B Iowa

Here at OlsFarm we grow figs in the extreme cold with temps as low as -25F. We have cold winters and hot summers but the growing season is relatively short at 155 day average frost free days. Growing figs can be tough in this environment but with the methods we go over in this video you can be successful also. This channel will cover all methods we employ, also some how to videos for over wintering. With over 200 trees in ground we decided to inspect a few and show the winter damage caused by an early frost before the trees went dormant. We are sacrificing a few fig trees to test a method for thawing the ground early to induce early wake ups. Over the next few weeks the fig trees will start to thaw and wake up, hopefully the roots have enough energy to send new growth from those that died back to the ground. Varieties will make a difference in reliable fruiting each year with the die back and this channel will showcase which ones you could expect fruit from while also helping you choose what to plant in your own home orchard.
