Sometimes fish can take a bigger bite than they can swallow. Because most fish species have hard dorsal spines that can only bend backwards, predators have to swallow their prey head-first. However, if they try to swallow a fish that’s too large to pass through the oesophagus, the backward-angled spines of their prey prevent the predator from spitting the fish back out. As the old saying goes, “Their eyes are bigger than their mouth!”
In our latest video, we attend to a Jewel cichlid that attempted to eat a juvenile, but it got stuck and had begun to rot. It’s a serious issue that can result in the death the predator. We demonstrate the extraction process for this medical emergency.
