As we pull out of Paddington in this iconic yellow-and-blue InterCity 125, we’re not just driving a train, we’re retracing the footsteps of railway history.

This stretch to Reading was part of the original Great Western Railway, engineered by none other than Isambard Kingdom Brunel in the 1830s. Back then, the journey by stagecoach took over four hours. But on 30 March 1840, the first public train hauled by the steam loco Firefly, cut that time to just over an hour. Revolutionary.

Fast forward to 1976, and the InterCity 125 bursts onto the scene. With its twin Paxman Valenta engines and sleek Mark 3 coaches, it redefined British rail travel, 125 mph on existing track, no new infrastructure needed. It was a triumph of engineering pragmatism, and it made this very route one of the fastest in the country.

As we cruise past stations like Slough and Maidenhead, think of the millions who’ve travelled this corridor from Victorian commuters to modern day speed chasers. And here we are, in the cab of a legend, reliving it all in Train Sim world.
