To give some context, there were stories of anthrax being sent in the post to various addresses around the world, and Liverpool manager Gérard Houllier had undergone an emergency operation on his heart after taking ill during a Premier League match against Leeds United, leading to his deputy Phil Thompson taking charge for five months while Houllier recovered.
