Schokland was for centuries a narrow, vulnerable island in the Zuiderzee, constantly threatened by storms and land loss. Yet fishing communities lived there, with Emmeloord, on the central mound, being the largest. On its eastern side lay the harbour of Emmeloord, which from the 17th and 18th centuries onward served as the centre of trade and fishing. From here, small boats set out to fish, and goods such as fish and peat were brought in.
Continuous subsidence and flooding made life increasingly dangerous. After severe storm damage and persistent poverty, the government in the Netherlands decided to evacuate the island in 1859. The harbour fell silent, and Schokland remained a 'ghost island' in the Zuiderzee.
Since the reclamation of the Noordoostpolder in 1942, Schokland has stood as an “island on dry land” in the middle of the countryside. The harbour of Emmeloord still shows traces, rows of posts, and reconstructed remains — quiet reminders of a vanished island community.
This drone video in 4K shows the old harbour of Emmeloord on the former island of Schokland.
