How To Prepare Your Car For Long Term Storage

Hey, guys! Dave here from First Place Auto Parts. Today, we're diving into something crucial – how to properly store your car for an extended period, especially during the winter months. The car we're working on is my 1956 Chevrolet, but these steps apply to many American muscle cars. Let's get started!**
🛢️ *Step 1: Change the Oil and Oil Filter*
Due to short drives and insufficient operating temperatures, acids and condensation can build up in the oil. Changing the oil prevents rusting and protects vital engine components.
🌡️ *Step 2: Check Coolant Freeze Protection*
Ensure there's enough coolant in the radiator with the correct freeze protection. Use a hydrometer to check the level and protection. Protect well below expected winter temperatures to avoid damage.
⚙️ *Step 3: Release Tension on Belts*
Loosen tension on alternator, power steering, and air conditioning belts. This prevents the belts from taking a set and relieves load on bearings during storage. Remember to retighten before restarting in spring.
🔧 *Step 4: Cylinder Protection*
Remove spark plugs and squirt cylinder protection agent (fogging oil) into each cylinder. Distribute the oil evenly by rotating the engine manually or using the starter.
🚗 *Step 5: Carburetor Draining*
Drain the carburetors to avoid ethanol-based fuel-related issues. For carburetors with float bowls above the main sealing gasket, remove and tip them upside down. For Holley carburetors, use the lower attaching bolts to drain fuel.
🛑 *Step 6: Fuel Stabilizer*
Before storing, fill the gas tank with fuel and add a fuel stabilizer suitable for ethanol fuel. Stabilize the fuel system to ensure a smooth start-up in the spring.

Remember to top off all fluid levels, including brake master cylinder and power steering. Work the accelerator pump in the carburetor to ensure all fuel is drained.
