Cuttack Angul NH 55 Status:

As of September 2025, the four-lane expansion of the Cuttack-Angul section of NH-55 has experienced significant delays but was nearing completion, with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) providing updated deadlines earlier in the year. In July 2025, an additional project for an elevated corridor in Cuttack was announced to further address traffic congestion. 

Project status (as of March–May 2025)

Revised completion dates: Following a ruling by the Orissa High Court and a statement from Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, the NHAI set revised completion deadlines for the different packages of the 112 km highway stretch.

Package 1 (Cuttack to Dhenkanal): Expected to be completed by March 2025.

Package 2 (Dhenkanal to Angul): Expected to be completed by April 2025.

Package 3 (Angul to Sambalpur): This 150 km stretch is already completed and operational.

Causes for delays: The project, originally awarded in 2017-18, faced numerous setbacks, including:

Land acquisition and forest clearance issues.

Financial difficulties of contractors.

The COVID-19 pandemic.

Poor planning, including the belated addition of elephant underpasses to the project. 

New developments in Cuttack

In July 2025, a new ₹640 crore elevated corridor for Cuttack was announced to alleviate traffic congestion on NH-55. 

The project has completed its Detailed Project Report (DPR).

Construction was expected to begin by the end of 2025, following final approval from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

Recent activity indicates the final stages of completion and utility work are in progress: 

In early September 2025, MoRTH approved work for laying a gas pipeline along a section of the highway near Angul.

Video updates from August 2025 showed that significant progress has been made on the road and side service roads in the area near Khuntuni.
