The more I listen to this album the more I find how flawless this album is. Steve Lacy has been the poster child for the diy bedroom pop genre that has been bubbling up for the last 6 or so years now and while I have been more than satisfied with his prior albums, it was obvious that he hadn’t met his potential yet but on “Gemini Rights” Steve executes his ideas on a level that is just perfect. He continues to experiment with different sounds and genres such as bossa nova and has sharpened his writing tremendously since “Apollo XXI”. Steve wears his Stevie Wonder and Prince influence on his sleeve as this album blends soft and melodic soul from the 70s with the more emotional and rock inspired vocals from the 80s. He sings and performs confidently while professing his vulnerability to whoever will listen. The run time for this album is also perfect, coming in at 35 minutes. Each song is direct and to the point, whether it’s the extremely catchy and heartfelt song of the year “Bad Habits” or the fun and colorful “Mercury” or the soft and sentimental closer “Give You The World. This album is a masterpiece and will continue to inspire artists for years to come.
