U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the United States seized a large oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela, a move that pushed oil prices higher and signaled a potential escalation in Washington’s pressure campaign on Caracas. Three U.S. officials said the operation was led by the U.S. Coast Guard, though they did not identify the vessel. Maritime risk firm Vanguard suggested the tanker was the Skipper, previously sanctioned by the U.S. for Iranian oil trading.
Brent crude rose to $62.21 per barrel, while WTI settled at $58.46 following the announcement.
During the same media availability, Trump said that CNN “should be sold,” either as part of a broader Warner Bros Discovery transaction or as a standalone sale. He also noted that Ukraine “hasn’t had an election for a long time” while speaking to reporters after participating in a roundtable and meeting with pastors.
