Wyoming BDR Part 1 - First 4x4 Completion with Trailer (Snow, Mud & Breakdowns)

We were the FIRST TEAM IN A 4X4 (with a trailer too) to complete the Wyoming Backcountry Discovery Route (BDR) - a 900-mile off-road adventure designed for adventure motorcycles. This is Part 1 of our journey from the Colorado border to Montana, and it immediately tested us with snow, mud, a flat tire, and multiple recovery situations. WYOMING BDR OVERVIEW:
Total Distance: 900+ miles off-road
Designed For: Adventure motorcycles (we did it in a Jeep with trailer)
Route: Colorado border to Montana border
Duration: Multiple days (we split into 2 parts)
Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult (conditions vary significantly)
Best Season: Late June through September (we went early May - mistake)
Vehicle Requirements: High clearance 4x4, recovery gear mandatory

WHAT'S IN PART 1:
This video covers the southern section starting near the Colorado border. We immediately hit challenging conditions: late-season snow, deep mud requiring recovery, water crossings with trailer, a flat tire from torn valve stem, steep rocky climbs, and massive mosquito swarms. This section proved the BDR is brutal in a full-size 4x4 with trailer.

CHALLENGES WE FACED:
Late-season snow on trail (early May was too early)
Deep mud sections requiring winch and traction boards
Flat tire - valve stem torn out on rocks
Water crossings with trailer in tow
Steep rocky climbs testing lockers
Kennedy Peak side trail attempt
Massive mosquito swarms (bring bug spray)
Herd of cows blocking trail
Zero cell service for extended periods

LESSONS LEARNED - CRITICAL FOR PLANNING:
1. *Timing Matters:* Early May was too early - snow and mud were major issues. Wait until late June or July for better conditions.
2. *Tire Pressure Management:* We ran lower pressures for traction but tore a valve stem. Bring spare valve stems and complete tire repair kit.
3. *Recovery Gear Essential:* We used traction boards, winch, and straps multiple times. Don't attempt without full recovery setup.
4. *Fuel Planning:* Remote sections require careful fuel management. We carried extra fuel in jerry cans.
5. *Trailer Adds Significant Difficulty:* Towing makes tight sections brutal. Many areas designed for motorcycles are challenging for full-size vehicles with trailers.

38-inch tires
Front and rear lockers (used constantly)
Winch (essential - used multiple times)
Tribe Trailer with camping gear
Recovery gear: traction boards, straps, shovel
Spare tire and tire repair kit
Extra fuel and water
GMRS radios for communication

WHAT IS A BDR (BACKCOUNTRY DISCOVERY ROUTE)?
BDRs are long-distance off-road routes created by Backcountry Discovery Routes organization, designed primarily for adventure motorcycles. Routes connect existing roads, trails, and two-tracks to create epic multi-day adventures through remote backcountry. The Wyoming BDR is 900+ miles of off-pavement challenge.

WHY 4X4 INSTEAD OF MOTORCYCLE?
Most people ride BDRs on adventure motorcycles, but we wanted to prove it's possible in a full-size 4x4 while towing a camping trailer. This allows for more gear, more comfort, and a different type of adventure. We were the first team to complete the entire Wyoming BDR this way.
