R1300 GSA | Riding Toward the Thailand–Myanmar Border

Today’s ride took us through Northern Thailand, heading toward Chiang Mai along one of the best motorcycle routes in Thailand, riding our BMW R1300 GSA.

We were riding south through the mountains toward Chiang Mai, passing through Fang, Chiang Dao, and Mae Rim. This stretch is popular with riders who hire motorcycles or scooters in Thailand, thanks to its smooth tarmac, flowing corners, light traffic, and big mountain scenery.

Parts of this route run close to the Thailand–Myanmar border, an area known for remote terrain and stunning roads, but also for increased military presence. As we explored smaller roads near the border before turning south, we were stopped by the Thai military and advised that it was not safe to continue further.

With no option to proceed, we turned back and continued our ride toward Chiang Mai, following Route 107, one of Northern Thailand’s most well-known riding roads and a favourite for both adventure bikes and smaller scooters.
