The Boeing 777X is the latest series of long-range, wide-body, twin-engine airliners and the newest member of the Boeing 777 family. It includes two primary variants, the 777-8 and the 777-9, and is designed to succeed the popular 777-300ER.
Here is an overview of its key features and current status:
✈️ Key Features and Technology
Folding Wingtips: A distinctive feature that allows the aircraft to have a greater wingspan (for better aerodynamic efficiency and fuel burn) while still fitting into the same airport gates as the current 777. The wingtips are manually folded up on the ground.
GE9X Engines: It is powered by the new General Electric GE9X engine, which is the largest turbofan engine ever built. The engines are designed for better fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
Composite Wings: The aircraft features new carbon-fiber reinforced polymer wings, contributing to its improved efficiency.
Improved Cabin: The interior offers a better passenger experience with a wider cabin, larger windows, improved air quality, and LED lighting.
🛠️ Program Status
Development Phase: The 777X program is currently in the flight testing and certification phase. The first flight of the 777-9 was in January 2020.
Delays: The program has experienced multiple delays due to various factors, including the certification process with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
First Delivery: As of late 2025, Boeing anticipates the first customer delivery (of the 777-9 variant) to be in 2027.
Orders: Despite the delays, the 777X family has a substantial order book from major global carriers, including Emirates (its largest customer), Qatar Airways, Lufthansa, All Nippon Airways, and Cathay Pacific.
