The Steyr RSO (Raupenschlepper Ost), or “Caterpillar Tractor East,” was developed by Austria’s Steyr company in 1942 to handle the harsh mud and snow conditions of the Eastern Front. Designed as a lightweight, fully tracked transport vehicle, it featured a simple cab, a flatbed cargo area, and excellent off-road mobility. The RSO could tow artillery, haul ammunition, and carry supplies where wheeled trucks could not operate. Rugged, easy to maintain, and highly effective in difficult terrain, it became a logistical lifeline for the German Army on the Eastern Front.
