In this video, I sit down with my mother as she shares a chilling story passed down from her childhood in Jamaica. Her mother once caught a huge black crab near the kitchen and locked it away in a bucket, planning to cook it the next day. But when the bucket was opened, the crab was gone. That same night, her father came to her in a dream, saying, “I came to visit you, and you locked me in a bucket.” That is when they realized the crab was no ordinary crab—it was a duppy, her father’s spirit, appearing in animal form.
My mother also shares another moment when her mother saw her late father stepping off a bus and walking into their yard, calling out to him in shock. These two encounters were the only times she ever saw her father again after he passed.
This haunting story shows how, in Jamaican culture, duppies often return in dreams or take the form of animals to visit loved ones.
