The Annual South African Police Service Commemoration Day highlights the dangers faced by police officers who protect communities. September is recognised as Police Safety Month, honouring the dedication of these officers. Tragically, 27 police officers lost their lives in the line of duty between April 2024 and May 2025, including Constable Sipho Mohapi and Constable Gedione Motloung, who were killed while responding to a robbery in January 2025.
During the commemoration at the Union Buildings, Deputy President Paul Mashatile spoke about the alarming statistics of police killings and their potential impact on a safer South Africa. Acting Minister of Police, Firoz Cachalia, emphasised the importance of safety measures for officers and encouraged police and communities to work together to combat violence against law enforcement.
