Brickfields Sri Sakthi Karpaga Vinayagar Temple—a sacred gem nestled in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, rich with history, divinity, and devotion
The temple is home to a unique form of Lord Ganesha—Sri Karpaga Vinayagar, unlike the thirty-six common images we usually see. Carved from a single granite block brought from Pillayarpatti in South India, this 5.1-foot-tall deity sits in a meditative pose.
With only two arms, His right hand holds a Shivalingam, and His trunk gracefully curves to the right in the Valampuri form—considered especially auspicious. His left hand rests on His belly, as He sits in deep meditation—not for Himself, but for the well-being of His devotees.
It is said that prayers made here are answered swiftly—because Karpaga Vinayagar is constantly in divine meditation for us.
Alongside Lord Ganesha, the temple also houses shrines for other powerful deities—Kaliambal, Balamurugan, Nagar, Agasthiyar, Dhakshinamoorthy, Bairavar, and the Navagrahas.
The temple’s origins trace back to the late 1950s, once situated within the Temple Road Quarters. But in 1989, it had to be relocated due to development projects in the area. After years of challenges, approvals, and negotiations—including intervention from Cabinet Ministers—the temple finally found its new permanent home beside the KL Monorail Depot.
On September 10, 2002, the groundbreaking ceremony was held by Y.A.B Dato’ Seri Dr. S. Samy Vellu. With expert guidance from Vastu Consultant Master Yuvaraj Sowma and Prof. Deivanayagam from Thanjavur University, the temple was constructed at a cost of RM 940,000.
Its design beautifully blends both North and South Indian temple architecture. The Vimana Gopuram reflects the style of the Kasi Gopuram, while intricate carvings and traditional layouts honour Tamil Agamic traditions.
The upper level of the temple includes the main sanctum, a library, computer room, and lecture hall. The ground floor houses a multipurpose hall, priest's quarters, kitchen, and other facilities. Future plans include counselling services, a Tamil kindergarten, and a daycare centre.
The temple's Maha Kumbabishegam was held on June 12, 2005, officiated by Dr. Sri Pichai Gurukkal Sivachariyar from Pillayarpatti. In 2020, the temple celebrated its second Kumbabishegam—a grand Maha Rajagopuram Kumbabishegam, marking the consecration of its monumental entrance tower and its transformation into a complete Agamic temple complex.
Today, the Sri Sakthi Karpaga Vinayagar Temple stands not just as a place of worship but as a powerful beacon of peace, culture, and divine grace—right in the heart of Brickfields
