Exposure to toxins which are poisons produced by higher order plants, single celled organisms, and a variety of animals for defense and digestion and in the aid in hunting of prey, can cause significant acquired brain injury. Toxins can also be waste products produced by the body which it cannot remove due to illness or injury. Poisons can also be synthetic or semi-synthetic products made by humans in the laboratory or certain metals or metalloids extracted from the ground. Any toxin or chemical substance that damages neurons is a neurotoxin.
Toxin has become the term of art to describe poison regardless of its origin, whether its produced via an organic synthetic process or not. This video gives a survey of the most common types of neurotoxins, the general ways that they cause injury and destruction to neurons, and discusses signs and symptoms of a usual neurotoxidrome associated with the typical case of Toxic Encephalopathy.
In this episode, we also discuss the "Other CTE: Chronic Toxic Encephalopathy..." and its associated signs and symptoms and how it is classified by OSHA and NIOSH.
There will be other episodes in which we describe specific cases of toxic encephalopathy and the signs and symptoms and what very few treatment options physicians and researchers have found. Unfortunately, funding is scarce in the field of toxicology.
