In 1823, Stephen F. Austin founded the town that would become the second largest town in Texas and serve as the economic, political, and social center of Austin’s Colony into the 1830s. But on March 29, 1836, the town was burned by its own citizens as a defensive maneuver during the Texas Revolution… never to be fully rebuilt.

San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site commemorates the location where, in 1823, Stephen F. Austin established a headquarters for his colony in Mexican Texas. The historic site includes a 10,000 square foot museum gallery, 1/3 mile of walking trails, and collection of 6 reconstructed log cabins recreating a historic block of San Felipe de Austin as it may have looked 200 years ago.
