WHY RENAISSANCE EUROPE HAD BLACK KNIGHTS, COURTIERS, AND DIPLOMATS
📜 STORY DESCRIPTION
For centuries, we were taught that Renaissance Europe was culturally uniform—white, isolated, and closed to the wider world. But the evidence tells a very different story.
This documentary uncovers the forgotten African presence in Renaissance Europe—from Black knights and saints to dukes, courtiers, musicians, and ambassadors who lived, worked, ruled, and shaped European history at the highest levels. You’ll discover how Saint Maurice, a Black Egyptian saint, became the patron of the Holy Roman Empire; how Alessandro de’ Medici, a mixed-race ruler, governed Florence; how John Blanke, a Black trumpeter, negotiated directly with the King of England—and won.
Through historical documents, paintings, sculptures, court records, and modern scholarship, this story reveals a Renaissance that was multicultural, complex, and deeply interconnected—far removed from the simplified portrayals we see in textbooks and period dramas.
This is not revisionism.
This is recovery.
The real Renaissance Europe was messy, diverse, and far more fascinating than we were ever taught.
And now, finally, we’re beginning to remember.
