New Mexico High Point | Skiing Wheeler Peak

Bennett and I travel to Taos, New Mexico to ski to the top of Wheeler Peak, the tallest mountain in New Mexico. At 13,167 feet above sea level, Wheeler Peak is located within the Wheeler Peak Wilderness area in the Carson National Forest. We do this as a 2 night adventure, where we set up base camp in the Bull of the Woods Yurt, close to Taos Ski Valley.

We decided to climb this mountain on skis. We had enough snow to ski on until our final ridge traverse, where we had to continue with just our boots. Skiing to the top of Wheeler Peak is not very common, which allowed us to have complete solitude for the entire weekend. We enjoyed stunning views of the surrounding mountains and saw dozens of bighorn sheep.
