For over a hundred years, some mysterious and exceptionally beautiful objects have been puzzling historians, scientists and members of the public. They are near life sized skulls, carved out of solid rock crystal. Some of them are kept in world famous museums. For decades crystal skulls have been the object of spiritual adulation by a growing number of worldwide devotees. Recently, the crystal skulls were even been written into the plot of an Indiana Jones movie.

The documentary tells the story of the crystal skulls as a history of a mystery, before making some startling revelations. It’s a story of adventurism, mysticism and science spanning 130 years. The true origin of the crystal skulls is one of archaeology’s most enduring mysteries, a mystery that is finally solved in this film. The revelations are made by scientists with the help of the very latest scientific instruments and methods.

The film travels to Paris and London. It was here, in the late 19th century, that two world renowned museums, the Musee de l’Homme and the British Museum, each acquired a crystal skull. Nothing like it had ever been seen by the public. The crystal skulls were believed to be from Mexico and of Aztec origin, an ancient society that had been obsessed with effigies of skulls. Scientific tests on the British Museum skull in the 1930s seemed to confirm that the ‘London skull’ was indeed of ancient origin. The museum authorities in Paris never tested their skull – at least not until very recently. They too assumed that their skull was a genuine antique. In 1996, the British Museum skull was again tested. This time scientists used a modern scanning electron microscope. The famous test, repeated in our film, showed marks left by circular carving tools. Neither Aztecs nor Mayans had the wheel. The conclusion was that the British Museum skull was a fake antique, of 19th century origin. By contrast, the Smithsonian skull seems to be from Mexico. But traces of a modern grinding agent on its surface suggest that it was carved as recently as the 1950s.

The film shows how the crystal skulls inspired a generation of people pre-occupied with the paranormal. Some people claim that the crystal skulls are like super computers from the past, and that they can answer any question you put to them. There are also claims that the crystal skulls were carved by people from the mythical lost continent of Atlantis, or that they were made by extraterrestrials. Today, thousands of people around the world use crystal skulls for spiritual purposes. They differentiate between modern and ancient crystal skulls, all of which are said to have paranormal powers. There is also a popular legend that as many as 13 ancient crystal skulls are in existence. When they ‘re-unite’, all the world’s knowledge will be revealed. This legend recently found its way into the plot of the latest Indiana Jones movie.
