Guest speaker Norman Shaw will tell a story of America’s worst nautical disaster, and explain why Knoxville has the country’s most-impressive monument to the tragic explosion of the Sultana—which occurred 156 years ago this month. It’s a bizarre story, remarkably little known, with a strong connection to East Tennessee, though the Sultana’s 1,100-plus victims died 400 miles away. Shaw is a founder of Knoxville’s Civil War Round Table and of the Association of Sultana Descendants and Friends, and probably the region’s foremost authority on the disaster.
