Environment-friendliness: The Present as Important as the Future

Sustainability is not only for passing down a good future to our children. Sustainability is needed for our happiness at the present.

A smart city’s sustainability aims to make the lives of people who live in this city happy right now. What’s important here is energy production and consumption. People should have ample energy for consumption as well as enjoy unpolluted nature.

Energy Experiment on Cobrador Island

On the small, remote Cobrador Island of the Philippines, its residents live in untainted nature, but had access to electricity for only 8 hours a day. But change has come to the island as solar power generators and ESS were set up in the homes.

Smart Grid on Jeju Island

Jeju Island, Korea’s premier tourist destination, is adopting the smart grid system, the power network system for a smart city. Smart grid refers to the power system in a smart city in which power suppliers and consumers can monitor and manage power use on a real-time basis. Environment-friendly energy production, energy storage through ESS, and networking of energy use in buildings and vehicles have brought dramatic changes to the lives of island residents.

Freiburg, the City of the Sun

Freiburg, an environmental city known for its solar power generation, is also leading the era of smart city. In Freiburg, there are a number of buildings that produce and consume energy in environment-friendly ways, such as passive house, zero energy house, and plus energy house.

Vauban and the Future of Cities

The village of Vauban implements diverse environment-friendly measures and, despite its proximity to a large city, is famous for its lush green zones and clean air. For the first time since the late 19th century and early 20th century when the ideal of garden city was adopted in Europe, the notion of smart city in the 21st century again presents the vision of model urban dwelling. That vision may be old, but can never be discarded.

환경성, 미래만큼 중요한 현재

지속가능성은 단지 우리의 후손들에게 좋은 미래를 물려주기 위한 것만이 아니다. 당장 우리의 행복, 그것을 위해서도 지속가능성이 필요하다.
스마트시티의 지속가능성은 바로 지금, 이곳 도시에 살고 있는 도시민들의 삶을 행복하게 해주기 위해서 존재하는 것이다. 여기서 중요한 것은 에너지의 생산과 소비다. 에너지를 풍족하게 쓰면서도 깨끗한 자연환경을 향유할 수 있어야 한다.

필리핀 코브라도 섬의 에너지실험

필리핀의 오지에 위치한 조그만 섬, 코브라도 섬의 주민들은 때묻지 않은 자연을 누리고 있지만 대신 하루 8시간 밖에 전력을 쓰지 못했다. 이들 각자의 집에 태양광 시설과 ESS(에너지저장장치) 기술이 적용되면서 변화가 시작되었다.

제주도의 스마트그리드

대한민국의 세계적인 관광섬, 제주도에는 스마트시티의 전력망 시스템이라 불리는 스마트그리드 체계가 도입되고 있다. 스마트그리드란 전력 공급자와 소비자들이 전기사용을 실시간으로 확인, 관리할 수 있는 스마트시티의 전력시스템이다. 친환경 에너지 생산, ESS를 통한 에너지 저장, 건물과 차량에서의 에너지 사용이 네트워크화되어 섬주민들의 생활에 변화를 가져왔다.

태양의 도시, 프라이부르크

태양광 발전으로 유명한 환경도시 프라이부르크는 스마트시티의 시대에도 선도적인 도시다. 프라이부르크는 특히 건물 분야에서 패시브하우스, 제로에너지하우스, 플러스에너지하우스 등 친환경적으로 에너지를 생산, 소비하는 건물들을 만들어 공급하고 있다.

보봉마을과 도시의 미래

다양한 친환경적 정책이 시행되는 보봉마을은 대도시와 인접해있음이 믿기지 않을만큼 풍성한 녹지대와 깨끗한 공기를 자랑한다. 19세기 말 ~ 20세기 초 유럽에 전원도시의 이상이 도입된 이래 21세기 스마트시티가 다시금 사람들에게
도시의 비전을 제시하고 있다. 그 비전은 오래되었지만 결코 폐기될 수 없는 것이다.
