‘Powell’s termination can’t come fast enough’: Trump lashes out at Federal Reserve Chair

President Donald Trump has hinted at firing Jerome Powell, adding the US Federal Reserve should have lowered rates already.

This comes after US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell warned President Trump’s tariff hikes are unlike anything in modern history and are a threat to inflation and jobs.

President Trump wrote in a post to his social media platform Truth Social: “The ECB is expected to cut interest rates for the 7th time, and yet, ‘Too Late’ Jerome Powell of the Fed, who is always too late and wrong, yesterday issued a report which was another, and typical, complete ‘mess!’.”

“Oil prices are down, groceries (even eggs!) are down, and the USA is getting rich on tariffs. Too Late should have lowered interest rates, like the ECB, long ago, but he should certainly lower them now. Powell’s termination cannot come fast enough.”

Later, at the White House, President Trump doubled down on those comments, accusing Mr Powell of “playing politics” as interest rates “should be down now”.

Mr Powell – who was nominated by Mr Trump for the job in 2017 – says he would not step down if the President asked him to.
