It's hard to believe now, but in the 1980s, many were tired of the Candidates Matches. Most of the star grandmasters simply didn't qualify, and the matches themselves lacked intrigue and appeal. How wonderful it would be to gather all the world's stars in one grand tournament! It's even harder to believe—but fans had had enough of the endless rivalry between the two Ks! If only this franchise could be rebooted and framed in a new context... A single grand tournament for the entire chess elite would solve this problem too. Imagine... Karpov, Kasparov, and everyone else... The tournament was supposed to become an alternative to the FIDE competitions and soon replace them.
