Is there a food that transports to you another time and place when you taste it? That is the power of food and culture. Chef Scott Turley only ever wanted to be a chef. He would run home after grade school to watch cooking segments on television. He's learned that when you focus on ingredients and the traditions that are passed down to prepare a food dish, you become connected to the culture through food, and incorporating local ingredients provides a sense of place no matter the style of food prepared. Scott Turley, CCE, AAC, is the executive chef and chief culinary officer for Grinnell College, managing all culinary operations and overseeing all of the College's catering function.
Turley began his career as a youngster who developed a passion for cooking. His first job was as a line cook in an Italian restaurant. From this humble beginning at the Italian restaurant, he progressed to become a chef at a French restaurant, a major hotel chain, and a major university before joining Grinnell College to develop a professional culinary department.
Turley has a long list of accomplishments in the culinary industry, including his most recent selection to the American Culinary Federation’s (ACF) prestigious American Academy of Chefs (AAC). The AAC is the honor society of the ACF and represents the highest standards of professionalism in the organization, society, and industry.
Turley continues his passion as a professional culinarian by his contributions to the industry and by sharing his talents and expertise with young people desiring to become professional chefs. He remembers his humble beginnings. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
