Mr. Anders Sundstrom takes us through to the Paul Brunngard lab to test the capacity of a variety of shoe wax polishes to create a shine. He calls it the flame test.
Solvents are a key component of wax polishes, as they amalgamate the various waxes into a malleable mixture, enabling smooth application while allowing the use of harder, glossier waxes for superior shine. Indeed, solvents are an essential part of the spit-shining process, where their evaporation facilitates the meticulous layering that yields a mirror-like finish, underscoring the chemistry at play in expert polishing techniques. The more solvents, the easier it is to build layer upon layer. And a fortiori, the more solvents, the greater the shine (or greater the ability to create a shine)
Waxes polishes are, of course, composed of waxes and a modest inclusion of additives -- each playing a role in the function of the polish.
