Outnumbered and ringed by guns, the Knights Hospitaller turned Rhodes itself into a weapon. As Mehmed II’s army pressed breaches in 1480, the defenders fought behind layered earthworks, countermines, and barricades—then reached for something fouler. When Ottoman assault columns packed into ditches and narrow breaches, the Knights dumped sewage, refuse, and rotting carcasses down onto ladders and trenches, turning choke points into choking pits. Armor slipped, wounds festered instantly, and panic spread through ranks forced to climb through filth under crossbow bolts and handgonne fire.
The humiliation was deliberate. While artillery thundered, the Knights launched night sorties to spike guns, burn mantlets, and drag prisoners back through the muck to be paraded on the walls. Disease followed the besiegers; morale cracked. After weeks of failed assaults and mounting losses, the Ottoman command lifted the siege and withdrew—leaving Rhodes unbroken. Against 70,000, a few hundred Knights proved that in siege warfare, disgust can be as lethal as steel.
