Linux Mint is often called the perfect Linux distro for beginners.
Stable, familiar, and easy to recommend.
But what happens when “beginner friendly” meets real hardware and real expectations?
In this episode, I put Linux Mint and Pop!_OS through a very practical, real-world test:
• Running a legacy Nvidia GPU (Quadro K2200)
• Fighting with Wi-Fi and external dongles
• Connecting laptops to TVs and large external displays
• Scaling, multi-monitor setups, and presentation-style use
Nvidia recently released a new legacy Linux driver (580.126.09 as of Jan 13, 2026), which made this a perfect moment to see how well Linux Mint’s driver manager and desktop experience actually cope outside the “it just works” narrative.
I also take a look at System76’s new COSMIC desktop in Pop!_OS, and why it feels far closer to what a paying professional would reasonably expect. Without pretending that it’s flawless, especially on older Nvidia hardware.
This isn’t a long-term verdict. It’s a reality check.
