Frédéric Chopin’s "Trois Valses", Op.70, though published posthumously in 1855, were composed much earlier and reveal a striking diversity of mood and character. No.2 in F minor is lyrical and tinged with melancholy, No.3 in D-flat major elegant and conversational, while No.1 in G-flat major stands out for its brilliance and exuberance, marked "molto vivace" and full of glittering figuration. This first waltz is nearly always played way too fast — due to a misreading of Chopin’s metronome mark “dotted half note = 88”. In his time, such a number referred to the full swing of a pendulum, not to literal beats per minute. Modern interpretations risk turning the piece into a blur of virtuosity, losing its charm and rhythmic clarity. The waltz also includes a contrasting middle section, introduced by molto ritenuto and meno mosso, which brings a lyrical and expressive quality — an elegant moment of repose before the exuberant material returns.
