What is HTML?
HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language.
It's the standard markup language for creating web pages.
HTML describes the structure of a web page.
It's made up of a series of elements.
HTML elements instruct the browser on how to display content.
Elements label content, such as headings, paragraphs, links, and more.
HTML History
1980: Tim Berners-Lee proposes the concept of HTML for sharing and storing documents at CERN.
1989: Berners-Lee proposes an Internet-based Hypertext System for navigating between computer information sets.
1990: Browser and server software for HTML is developed despite initial funding rejection.
1991: Tim Berners-Lee publicly posts the first HTML description, containing 18 elements influenced by SGML.
September 1991: Open discussions about HTML across the internet fuel further development and academic interest.
Early 1993: Dave Raggett starts developing Arena, a browser showcasing new HTML features.
July 1994: HTML 2 Specification is released, defining widely-used HTML tags.
1999: HTML 4.01 is released, becoming the standard markup language and introducing CSS for web page styling.
2000: XHTML, an XML format of HTML, is standardized.
October 28, 2014: HTML5 is released, introducing new tags like header, footer, main, and video.
Present: HTML5 serves as the standard markup language for web page attributes.
