WE ENCOUNTERED A WHALE SHARK IN MOALBOAL, CEBU | FREE DIVING + SARDINE RUN + TURTLE ENCOUNTER

There’s more for you deeper than what you can actually fathom. There’s a thin line that divides the surface from the depths but only few dared to explore the latter; braved to take the plunge of what’s lurking below.

We started the day by going as early and drove to Moalboal, one of Cebu’s most visited and famous dive spots. Moalboal is a 3 hour ride from the city so we went early to escape the rush hours. Moalboal is frequently visited due to its white sand beaches and a dive spot called Panagsama where you can encounter underwater creatures like the famous sardines, hawksbill turtle and if lucky enough, even whale sharks and dolphins.

We took our breakfast in their local market before registering at the tourism office and ordered some hot coffee to kickstart our day. And by then we meet Sir Steven, our tour guide. Sir Steven has been my tour guide ever since I first tried the sardine run in Moalboal and it has been 5 times or 6 since my first. En route to the beach, we chose to dive first in Moalboal’s famous mermaid statue. This is the first time that me and my friends are gonna try free diving since we finished our freed diving classes last week. A test of how well did we actually learn. The mermaid statue was about 7 meters deep but we went there when it wasn’t yet too high tide so we were able to reach it although we are beginners. We stayed for an hour before heading to our main intention, the Sardine Run in Panagsama Beach.

At first glance, Panagsama Beach may seem like it doesn’t have much to offer. Its shoreline is crusted with rocks and corals with shallow sand. There isn’t much of a shore but the appeal of Panagsama Beach is underneath its waters. Moalboal is known for having some of the best dive spots in Asia. The hawksbill turtle will greet you , Hi in the shallow. These turtles thrive peacefully in Moalboal and get’s back to the shallow even though a lot of tourists flock to see them.

But what keeps me coming to Moalboal is the sardine. run. I am always amazed by how these school of fishes are gazed for free by the people without much effort. It’s so beautiful and relaxing to watch. This is one of the reasons why I studied freediving, being able to swim with them is one of the most proud moments you can try in your lifetime.

My natural inclination towards finding beauty in every places I’ll find and my cravings for my quest of beauty goes a very long list. I am so lucky to be a Cebuano and celebrate the perks of what this province offers. I am excited to see more of Cebu. Join me in my next adventure.
